How to buy with confidence

Some businesses have signed up to the Office of Fair Trading approved code of practice which is committed to delivering higher standards of customer service than the law requires.  So, whether you are selling your house, repairing your car or booking a holiday, you can click on to the OFT website www.codes.oft.gov.uk and search the trade you need by entering your postcode.

OFT approved businesses ensure consumers receive:

clear information about the goods or services being purchased
a straight foward, quick and easily understandable customer complaints process with access to independent redress if necessary
clear and fair contract terms
additional help if they are vulnerable
protection for customers deposits or prepayments if a business ceases to trade

A code only receives OFT approval after evidence has been provided to show it delivers genuine benefits to consumers.  The OFT will monitor performance and can withdraw approval and take action where necessary
