Poole Park Makeover Begins

Work is now underway at Poole Park link will open in new windowwhich will transform the area and improve the facilities in one of the town’s most popular locations.

The £2m project, which is being funded by the current owners of the existing café, includes a new licensed restaurant on the former boat compound, and a refurbished café’ with an indoor children’s ice rink.

To allow the building of the restaurant, vegetation around the site has been cleared either because it conflicted with the position of the restaurant or due to its poor health. Replanting will take place once the building works have been completed to enhance the new building.

The three protected trees, the two oaks and a beech, will remain as the restaurant has been designed around them and they will be provided with suitable trunk and ground protection during the building works.

The existing public toilets will be amalgamated with the internal café toilets which will result in improved facilities, but to facilitate these works the existing public toilets in the Cygnet café will need to be closed temporarily.  The date of this closure is still to be confirmed but is likely to be after the half term holiday in October. The other public toilets at the western end of the park will remain open throughout the development period.

Work will also begin shortly to dredge part of the main lake to allow the return of sailing at the park. This £200,000 initiative, which is being funded through developers’ contributions, will include the dredged sand being used to create a number of small islands that could be subtly lit to enhance the area’s presence in the evenings.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “These are exciting times for Poole Park, one of the town’s crowning glories. However in order to realise this vision there will be a period of disruption over the next few months which we will certainly endeavour to keep to a minimum wherever possible. We would like to thank the park users for their patience and co-operation during this time and look forward to next Spring when we can all enjoy the new and improved facilities.”
