26 Nov 04Poole Town Centre Lit up for Christmas
Several thousand people joined Poole Pirate riders Bjarne Pedersen and Magnus Zetterstrom to turn on the Christmas lights at Falkland Square in Poole town centre, officially celebrating the beginning of Poole’s festive season. \n
The 50 foot Christmas tree decorated with hundreds of colourful lights illuminated the area to the delight of shoppers. The switch on followed an action-packed evening of entertainment from 2CR FM, stilt walking characters, carol singing, belly dancing, a dazzling candlelit procession, and a street circus performance.
Poole Speedway bikes were also on display within the Dolphin Shopping Centre.
Roger Boyce, Chairman of Poole town centre management board, said: "It was fantastic that so many people came along to see the lighting up of the town centre. The evening was a huge success, and certainly our best yet. Everyone was in great spirits and people very generously donated gifts for the Daily Echo/2CR FM ‘Make a Kid’s Christmas’ campaign, which will be distributed to children’s homes, hospitals and local hospice Julia’s House. The event has been a culmination of many people’s hard work, and thanks go to all those who helped make the evening so special."
The event was organised by Poole Town Centre Management in association with media partner 2CR FM, Poole Arts Development Unit, SoundStorm (Dorset Music Service), and Wave (Arts Education Agency), and sponsored by Breeze Volkswagen.
