Food and drink is often consumed away from the dining table - the new exhibition at Poole Museum chronicles the ways plastic items have been used in the food industry.
'Eat in or Take Out? Plastics for Portability' exhibits a wide range of plastic items showing the different ways the material has been used for transporting food and drink, and how their design and character have changed with our eating habits and greater awareness of the environment.
When it comes to snacking and eating on the move, plastic has often been the material of choice for designers and manufacturers. It is cheap to make, light to carry, durable and insulating, making it the ideal choice for food and drink containers.
At a time when there are strong concerns about the effects of the manufacture and disposal of plastics on the environment, this exhibition is a timely survey of design in plastic over six decades.
To showcase the variety of forms modern and historic plastic containers take the exhibit is split into 14 sections including picnic past and present, squeeze me and TV times.
The colourful displays include familiar packaging such as burger boxes as well as historical items such as in-flight airline catering equipment from the British Overseas Airways Corporation.
Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "The Council is committed to reducing Poole's carbon footprint. This exhibition gives us the opportunity to learn from the lessons of the past and to think about how we can avoid creating and using plastics in an unsustainable way in the future."
Michael Spender, Museum Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "The exhibition was created by the Museum of Design in Plastics at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and we are very pleased to be able to provide this showcase for part of its rich collection."
The free exhibition opened on July 21 2008 and runs until 15 March 2009.
