New Dual Bins are Twice as Nice

Poole's smart new dual bins are already helping to boost the borough's recycling rates.

Borough of Poole is investing £257,000 in providing 300 new dual bins for streets and open spaces across the borough.

With more than 200 now installed, the bins are already proving to be a real success.

Almost a third of all the litter deposited in the bins is being recycled. This is helping to keep the Poole free from litter and on target to achieve the overall goal of recycling 40 per cent of the borough's waste by 2010.

Branded in line with Poole's doorstep waste collections, the dual bins allow people to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass and cans in the blue section. Other litter and bagged dog waste can be deposited in the black section. The bins also feature a stub plate for cigarette butts.

The new bins are larger, helping to combat the problem of overflowing bins in popular locations during busy periods such as the High Street during summer.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "The public response to the new bins has been brilliant. With a 30 per cent recycling rate for the bins already, it is clear that residents have taken their knowledge from the home waste scheme and applied it to the streets with ease. The dual bins scheme is just one of many initiatives being introduced in line with Poole's Waste Strategy Review."

The Waste Strategy has been reviewed to help guide Poole's efforts to reduce and recycle more of its waste in the years up to 2020.

A series of Waste Strategy Review roadshows are being staged across Poole so residents can find out more about the plan and give their views.

There will be a roadshow on Saturday September 13 at Ashley Road, Parkstone from 10am till 3pm and The Quay on Sunday September 14 from 10am till 3pm.
