Fans of historic buildings will be able to explore some of Poole's hidden architectural treasures for free on Saturday, September 13.
Poole Museum is opening the doors on some of the town's oldest buildings as part of Dorset Architectural Heritage Week 2008.
Among the architectural gems now cared for by Borough of Poole's Museum Service are Scaplen's Court and the old Town Cellars.
The Town Cellars, now home to the borough's Local History Centre, is the oldest building in Poole Old Town and one of the most important medieval port buildings in Europe.
Free guided tours will be held at Scaplen's Court at 11am and 2pm. Visitors will be able to learn about the history of the town's most complete domestic medieval house and discover graffiti from the Civil War period scribbled on its fireplace.
People will also be able to explore a reconstructed Roman farmstead at Upton Country Park. A free shuttle bus will run between Poole Museum and Upton Country Park throughout the day.
There will also be a chance to meet some of the volunteers who work in Poole Museum and Scaplen's Court Garden and to find out how to get involved in the museum's work. Representatives of Poole Museum Society will also be on hand to talk about their programme of forthcoming events.
Michael Spender, Manager of Poole Museum, said: "Poole has such a rich and fascinating history, much of which can be explored through the town's architectural treasures. We hope people will enjoy the chance to discover more about the heritage of Poole's historic buildings."
The Treasures of Poole event will be held at Poole Museum, High Street, Poole, on Saturday, September 13, from 10am to 5pm.
