Share in the Community

Borough of Poole is inviting residents to share their ideas on how to run community play events for children and young people.

Teenage boy on BMXThe Community Planning meeting at Upton Country House on Wednesday 26 November is open to residents who would like to get involved with local Fundays or plan their own community play event.

Residents can talk to others who have been involved in Fundays, share ideas for future events and get advice about how to access funding and promote an event.

The popular Fundays, which are sponsored by The Big Lottery link will open in new window, give Poole families a chance to take part in fun-packed sports, play, arts and environmental activities in their local area free of charge.

Benefits of running a Funday in the community include creating opportunities for children and young people of all ages and abilities to try new activities, build stronger community links and get young people involved in helping to make improvements to their local area.

More than 800 people attended the most recent Fundays held during October half term at Turlin Moor and Creekmoor. At the Turlin Moor event young people helped improve a nearby pond area by creating mesh sculptures to brighten up fencing.

Activities at other Fundays held across the borough this year have included BMX bike courses, DJ workshops, kite making, stock car mechanics, face painting, sports coaching, karaoke, drumming workshops and arts and crafts with local bands providing live music.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "Fundays and other community events are a great way for residents to meet their neighbours and for children and young people to try new activities for free. They are also an ideal opportunity for young people to help make improvements to their local area and have fun. We are extremely pleased with the positive feedback we have received and hope that many more people will want to get involved in planning future events."

The meeting starts at 6pm and a buffet will be available free of charge. People interested in attending the meeting must book their place by Friday 21 November.

To book a place, please contact Virginia Bailey, Recreation Development Officer, on 01202 261304.
