Mysteries of Shipwreck Revealed

The mysteries of a shipwreck found in Poole Harbour will be revealed at Poole Museum on Saturday 1 November.

Leading maritime archaeologists from Bournemouth University link will open in new window will talk about their latest findings following the discovery of the 17th century warship whose identity is still unknown.

The talk about the 'Swash Channel Wreck' link will open in new window found in 2004 forms part of a series of free talks organised by Borough of Poole and Poole Museum Society.

Maritime archaeologists Dave Parham and Paola Palma will discuss the excavation project including the discovery of a number of unique carvings, which includes a perfectly preserved merman carving.

Items from the ship, which has been designated a nationally important wreck by English Heritage link will open in new window, will eventually go on display in Poole Museum.

Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "We are very pleased to be working alongside Poole Museum Society on these talks and hope there will be many more in the future. The subjects are fascinating and by holding them at weekends we hope to attract many more visitors to the Museum."

Brian Ellis, Chairman of Poole Museum Society, said: "We are delighted to be working with Poole Museum to provide these events which reflect some of the present and future highlights of Poole Museum's collections."

The talk will begin at 2pm and visitors are asked to reserve a place in advance.

A second talk by Poole Pottery link will open in new window master potter Alan White will be held on Saturday 6 December.
