Public Praise Transport Services

Poole and Bournemouth have been highly rated in a nationwide survey of public attitudes to highways and transport services.

In a postal survey conducted this summer by Ipsos MORI link will open in new window, Poole came top overall and Bournemouth was sixth out of the 30 highway and transport authorities participating from across the country.

Poole scored the highest satisfaction rating for street lighting, road safety and highways enforcement. Bournemouth was within the top three councils for bus services, public transport information and highway maintenance. Both councils performed well in many other areas of their highways service.

Julian McLaughlin, Head of Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "This is the first time such a survey has taken place to benchmark councils across the country. It's a great achievement for both Poole and Bournemouth to be rated so highly by the residents who took part in the survey."

Councillor Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: "Staff in Transportation Services are committed to delivering a high standard of service. I'm sure it's their "can do" attitude that has helped us to achieve such a high rating."

Mike Holmes, Director of Planning and Transport link will open in new window, Bournemouth Borough Council link will open in new window, said: "I am very pleased with the results of this survey which demonstrate the high levels of service that we are providing for our customers. Now that we have the results we can share our best practice, but still continue to learn from other authorities."

Councillor Robert Lawton link will open in new window, Environment and Transport Portfolio Holder for Bournemouth Borough Council, said: "These are really encouraging results and reflect well on the enormous effort that has been put into improving highways and transport services for local residents".

The questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 4,500 residents in each participating authority and the findings will enable local authorities to share best practice and identify opportunities to work together in the future.
