Spare a Thought for your Waste Collection Crew

Motorists are being asked to spare a thought for their refuse collectors' safety this winter.

Wind, rain and the darker early mornings make the work of Borough of Poole's waste collection crews more demanding during the winter months.

The council is encouraging residents to take time to consider the safety of waste collection crews by remembering a few simple guidelines.

Drive slowly and carefully around collection vehicles and allow plenty of space as staff may be working at the front, rear or side of the vehicle at any time.

If temporarily caught behind a collection vehicle, drivers are being asked to be patient and not attempt to pass until it is safe for both the driver and the collection crew.

Waste collection crews are issued with hi-visibility jackets and trousers so drivers are able to see them clearly.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "When the clocks change it causes reduced daylight in the morning making working conditions difficult for waste collection crews. Recent feedback from members of the public about their work has been very positive. We ask that motorists take extra care to ensure the crews can get their job done quickly and safely.

Louis Medley, Principal Officer for Waste Operations, Borough of Poole, said: "Residents tell us that waste collection is one of the most important services they receive. Our crews work hard to ensure everyone receives a fair and reliable service in all conditions. Please support their efforts by reducing the risks to them by remembering the guidelines."

Poole's collection teams work throughout the year to empty on average 90,343 bins per week.
