21 Oct 08Canford Bridge to Re-open Early
Canford Bridge will re-open two days ahead of schedule as a major phase of the project is completed.
Essential repair works to the main bridge and flood arches completed early will allow a single lane of the bridge to re-open to traffic on the evening of October 22.
Traffic signals will control the single lane traffic to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely while a new footbridge is erected.
New road surfacing completes the current phase of work to the bridge.
The Grade 2 listed structure is being renovated as part of a £3.2 million engineering project jointly funded by Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council
.
Work on site began at the end of March but a full road closure was required to allow essential bridge strengthening and construction of a new reinforced concrete deck to support the roadway.
Cllr Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: "I would like to congratulate the engineering team and contractors for their hard work on this element of the project. This was a massive task and they have ensured work was completed within the timescale set and I am extremely pleased that we are able to re-open the bridge ahead of schedule."
Col. Geoffrey Brierley
, Cabinet Member for Transporation, Dorset County Council, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to deliver this stage of the project ahead of the previously published time. We realise the past few months have not been easy for local people and we would like to thank them for their patience during the closure of the bridge."
The bridge is scheduled to re-open to two-way traffic once the project is complete in January.
Completion of the stonework repairs under the river bridge will be completed next year. The bridge will remain fully open during this time.
