23 Jul 08Local Park Gets a Makeover
A revamp of a recreation ground in Oakdale was celebrated at a tea party with local residents and children on Friday 18 July.
The Mayor, Cllr Joyce Lavender, officially opened the new toddler play area, which completed the project to improve the facilities at St George's field.
The new play facilities include a range of climbing equipment and a wooden adventure trail for toddlers including a clatter bridge and a play train.
Visitors to the playground will be greeted by Barney the Bear and two wooden sheep, which have been nicknamed 'Joel and Jade' after two local children.
For older children using the area, swings and slides were given a makeover and a new sports wall installed which offers youngsters a range of activities including football and basketball shooting practice.
Working with the local community, Borough of Poole's Leisure Services carried out the project following a campaign by residents three years ago to improve the facilities in the park.
Local resident Janine Dupont, said: "Involving children and other park users in the process was important and meant that we could ensure that the development would suit all ages and many generations to come. We are extremely grateful to everyone involved in the project."
Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole said: "The facilities offer children a wonderful opportunity to play and interact together as well as benefitting local residents. Projects like this highlight what can be achieved by listening to the community and working with them to improve the area."
The project was funded by local planning obligations and other improvements included replacing a footpath and new gates.
