2012 Sailing Hopeful Inspires Young Sports Leaders

Nine young people from Poole have gained a nationally recognised Sports Leaders link will open in new windowqualification.

Rebecca Wall, Courtney Mitchell, Ben Hawker, Sam Maese, Grant Ellis, Amber Phillips, Hannah Lockley, Gavin Lockton and Dean Marshallsay spent four days of their school holidays, as well as four evening sessions, completing the Sports Leaders Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership.

The course culminated in the group putting their new skills into practice, delivering a morning of sporting activities to children aged between seven and 13 attending the holiday camp. This was followed by a football tournament to complete a Junior Football Organiser Course the young people had also undertaken in their school holidays.

Harriette Trumble, a member of the British Sailing Team, paid the young leaders a special visit and provided inspiration about the important role that they as leaders can have on young people's lives through delivering sport.

Virginia Bailey, Recreation Development Officer and course tutor, Borough of Poole, said: "This is a great achelvement for all the young people that have taken part in the course over the last couple of months and they should be extremenly proud of themselves and what they have acheived."

Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Borough of Poole, said: "I am delighted with this news, it shows the dedication and enthusiasm that our younger residents have towards their sporting goals, as well as towards supporting their younger peers."

The course was run by Borough of Poole's Leisure and Youth Services, in partnership with Nacro link will open in new window and the FOCUS link will open in new window community project, which aims to break down barriers between the police and young people.
