25 Mar 08Carers Can Learn for Free
People caring for friends or relatives at home are invited to attend a special course to provide them with practical advice and support.
The Caring at Home course, run by Borough of Poole Adult Social Services, is open to those who look after a friend or relative with an illness or disability in Poole, and is free of charge.
Covering sessions on rights and benefits, personal care, stress management, assistive technology and the legal aspects of caring for another person and their affairs, the course begins on April 3.
Val Mitchell, Carers Services Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "These training sessions provide an opportunity for those who are caring for people to meet with others in a similar position and learn about many aspects of caring. By the time carers have completed the course they will know about the practical and financial help they are entitled to and have a range of skills that will help them with everyday caring tasks.
"So many carers struggle on alone and do not know where to get information, advice or support. This course provides an informal opportunity to learn with others. There is no writing to do or homework - it's all very friendly and informal. Carers who have attended the course in the past have praised it highly."
Caring at Home begins on Thursday April 3 and runs for one day a week for five weeks. Training sessions are held in Parkstone and run from 11am to 2pm. Lunch is provided.
Support to look after the cared for person while the carer attends the course may be able to be arranged for a small fee.
Carers who are interested in the course or other services to help with caring can contact Val Mitchell at Borough of Poole on 01202 261174.
