Garden Waste Recycling Launches for Spring

Poole's garden waste recycling scheme is back for the Spring and Summer, giving residents the chance to dispose of their green waste in an environmentally-friendly way.

The successful green bin kerbside collection, available for 22,000 participating households, gets underway from Monday March 31 and will run over the summer months until the end of October.

In 2007, the scheme enabled 4,500 tonnes of garden waste to be diverted from landfill, the equivalent weight of 640 double-decker buses, more than doubling the 1,900 tonnes collected in 2006.

Householders without a green waste kerbside collection are encouraged to compost at home. Composting kitchen and garden waste at home is not only a great way to help the environment, but spreading the compost on your flowerbeds will improve the quality of your soil and help your garden thrive.

Alternatively, residents can take their grass cuttings, hedge and shrub clippings, plants and weeds to fortnightly garden waste collection points at Rossmore Leisure Centre and the Baiter North Car Park until the end of October.

The next garden waste collection point will be held on Saturday April 12 at Rossmore Leisure Centre, Herbert Avenue, between 9am and 12pm, and at the Baiter North Car Park, near the skate park, from 1pm to 4pm.

The collection points are in addition to the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre, where garden waste and much more can be recycled seven days a week between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Recycling your garden waste is a great way to help the environment. However you take part, the garden waste recycling scheme will further help in achieving Government targets for recycling as well as reducing the waste that is sent to landfill."
