Family History Week

Borough of Poole is helping local people discover their family history with a week of free exhibitions, surgeries and workshops.

Family History week, from 28 January to 2 February, features a chance for people to find out about the lost history of African and Caribbean people in Dorset, discuss their family research and discover the resources available on the 'Ancestry' website.

Events at Poole Central Library:
Monday, 28 January - Friday 1 February, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm
Displays and advice from the Dorset Family History Society

Monday, 28 January - Saturday 9 February
'Dorset's Hidden Histories Exhibition' - using photographs, archives, interview, books and film to tell stories of people of African and Caribbean heritage in Dorset from the 17th century to the present day.

Wednesday, 30 January, 11.00am - 1.00pm
Free 'Hidden Histories Writing Workshop' with local poet, writer and historian, Louisa Adjoa Parker. The workshop will involve discussions and creative writing based around the 'Hidden Histories Exhibition'.

Friday, 1 February, 2.30pm -3.30pm
Free workshop on the 'Ancestry' website. The website is only available in libraries and can be used to access free online family history information. It gives access to birth, marriage and death and census information as well as a host of other databases.

Events at Broadstone Library:
Wednesday, 30 January, 10.30am-3.30pm
Displays and advice from Somerset and Dorset Family History Society and an opportunity to explore their local resources.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure, said: "Researching family history is a fun and exciting way for people to find out about their heritage. I am sure many people would like to attempt this but don't know where to start. These workshops and exhibitions an ideal opportunity to get some advice and guidance."
