18 Dec 07Christmas Recycling Made Easy
Residents of Poole are being encouraged to recycle their extra Christmas waste and continue the tremendous recycling effort that has been seen throughout the year.
Most Christmas packaging, including cardboard, Christmas cards and wrapping paper (providing it is paper based) can be recycled through the Council's Blue Bin scheme. Evidence of Christmas celebrations including, wine bottles, beer cans and food jars can also be disposed of in the Blue Bin. Residents are reminded to wash and squash where appropriate to gain maximum capacity in their blue bin.
For households that miss one blue bin collection, clear plastic bags will be issued for extra recycling. Blue Bins and the extra bags will be collected on the first collection date after the 31 December.
Residents can also recycle their Christmas trees and garden waste through collection points set up in Poole throughout January.
Between 2 - 13 January (inclusive) there will be a garden waste collection point at Upton Country Park.
On 5 January collection points will be at:
Beach Road Car Park, Canford Cliffs (9am - 12pm)
Rossmore Leisure Centre, Alderney (9am - 12pm)
Baiter North Car Park, Poole Town (1pm - 4pm)
On 12 January collection points will be at:
Lake Pier Car Park, Hamworthy (9am -12pm)
St Barnabas Church, Bearwood (1pm - 4pm)
Additional bulky household waste and green waste can be disposed of at the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre, Nuffield Road, which is open every day from 8.30am - 4.30pm (last entry 4.15pm), except Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Year's day.
Tom Gaze, Recycling and Waste Minimisation Officer, Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, said: "Since the introduction of the Blue Bin scheme in September 2004 recycling levels have reached over 40%. We are asking residents to continue the great work over this busy period and to think about the items that could easily be recycled."
Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "With Christmas comes a larger amount of waste. It is estimated that 83 square km of wrapping paper will end up in UK rubbish bins and over 7.5 million Christmas trees will be bought over the Christmas period in the UK. By recycling residents can make a real difference to the local environment."
