Funding For Poole's Recycling Campaign All 'Wrapped' Up

The Borough of Poole has secured more than £250,000 to support a campaign to promote increased recycling in the Borough.

Environmental & Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS) has been awarded £259,100  from Waste Resource Action Programme link will open in new window(WRAP) to fund a promotional campaign aimed at raising rates of recycling.

The award is part of a £13 million Behavioural Change Local Fund made available to WRAP under the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' link will open in new window(DEFRA) Waste Implementation Programme. The programme aims to increase participation in recycling and waste minimisation initiatives across England.

E&CPS successfully secured the funding, despite fierce competition from other local authorities, after submitting a unique bid based around a promotional campaign designed to increase participation in recycling, both by residents and visitors to Poole.

The campaign will enable the Council to build on the popularity of its successful Blue Bin Scheme, which is consistently hitting the Government's tough statutory targets for recycling.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment said: "We are delighted to have received this funding, which is the result of much hard work and commitment of our recycling team. The money will be used to deliver an innovative and result orientated promotional campaign which will reach both householders and visitors building on our already successful blue bin scheme.  With three million visitors to the area each year, this is an exciting opportunity for us to take recycling in Poole to the next level."

The funding runs to 31 March 2008 and the campaign will include advertising, promotions,  production and distribution of collection calendars and educational roadshows.

WRAP is a not for profit company created in 2000 as part of the Government's waste strategies across the UK and part of its aim is to increase public participation in recycling.
