STANDARDS FOR 11-YEAR-OLDS GO UP AGAIN

Performance by Poole's pupils in English, Mathematics and Science has risen for the second year running in all three subjects.

The Borough of Poole has today published the table of results for the National Curriculum Assessments of 11 year olds which took place in Poole schools last May. These results follow closely on the excellent results by Poole's schools for GCSE and A' Levels reported recently.

Jeff Hart, Head of School Advice and Support Services, said: "The achievements of children in Poole are due to their hard work, together with the support of their schools and their families. We are very pleased with the efforts made by all concerned."

He added: "The tables record assessment in English, Mathematics and Science which, while important, is only a small part of the work of pupils and teachers in schools. We must also remember the other subjects and aspects of learning being covered and also the wider achievements gained at every age range."

Schools in Poole and the Borough of Poole have been working in partnership on the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, placing emphasis on literacy and numeracy across the curriculum. In doing so, the Borough of Poole will continue working to raise the high standards achieved by schools in all key stages.

Cllr Annette Brooke, the Borough of Poole's Executive Lead Member for Learning, said: "We are really pleased with these new sets of results and are optimistic about the continuing development of the Borough's education service. We must congratulate the children who worked so well for their assessments last year and give all our pupils every support for their future learning. The focus is very much on school improvement. High standards for 11 year olds provide a good base for children's success in later years as they move towards GCSE."
