17 Nov 00POOLE LIGHTS UP THIS CHRISTMAS
Poole Town Centre will be a brighter place this Christmas when a new display of festive lighting is switched on by comedian Harry Hill on Thursday 23rd November at 6pm.The whole of the Town Centre, including Falkland Square, Kingland Crescent, the High Street and the Quay, will benefit from the major investment being made by the Poole Town Centre Management Board in its first year of operation,
Janet Knox, Town Centre Manager, said: "40% of all retail trade is undertaken during the Christmas period, and we decided that lighting up Poole this Christmas must be a priority. In recognition that Christmas is such an important time, we need to maintain a competitive edge in the face of strong competition within the area."
Sarah Morgan of Beales, Chairman of the Poole's Town Centre Management Board, said:
" At last Poole will have Christmas decorations to be proud of. Retailers have not been asked to contribute specifically to the costs as we wanted to demonstrate the impact of Town Centre Management through partnership."
Harry Hill, who will be appearing in the Poole Arts Centre later in the evening, will be performing the switch-on ceremony outside Woolworths in Poole High Street, in the presence of the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Joyce Jones.
Family entertainment in the High Street will be provided by 'Bart Simpson' and Jonathan the Jester, and people will also have the opportunity to enjoy their first evening of late night shopping in Poole.
