ALGAE RETURNS TO POOLE PARK LAKE

Samples of water taken recently from Poole Park Lake by Borough of Poole officers and analysed by the Environment Agency have been found to contain blue-green algae.

This algae is a natural inhabitant of many inland waters, estuaries and the sea. It is capable of producing toxins which can be dangerous. Because of this the lake has been temporarily closed.

The Park and all the other attractions are open as usual and there is no risk to anyone visiting the park.

In order to avoid the risk of illness visitors to the park are requested to avoid contact with the water in the large salt water lake. The small lakes near Swan Lake Cafe are not affected.

Should accidental contact be made with contaminated water, it is only necessary to consult a doctor if illness occurs. Symptoms can include skin rashes, eye irritation, pain in muscles and joints.

Animals may also contract illness, and even die if they drink contaminated water. Pet owners are advised to take precautions to prevent their animals gaining access to the lake water.

Jeff Morley of Consumer Protection Services said: "The algae is growing in large numbers and it is not possible to eliminate it completely. Staff are monitoring the situation and taking samples to ensure that the lake can be reopened as soon as possible. In the meantime, signs are being erected pointing out the risks."

Clive Smith of Leisure Services added: "We are not alone in experiencing this problem which occurs all over the country, but we are doing all we can to find a way of restoring the natural balance."

The Council has tried different ways of controlling the algae with limited success to date.

However, funding has just been obtained for a restoration and management plan for Poole Park with a view to making an application for Lottery funding.

Included in this initial stage is the employment of a specialist water technology consultant to investigate the biological and ecological factors causing the algae to bloom in the salt water lake.
