DfEE SECONDARY SCHOOL PERFORMANCE RESULTS 1999

For the third year running the performance of Poole students at GCSE has shown a noticeable improvement.

Nearly 1500 pupils were entered for a total of over 13,000 exams covering the full range of subjects. Almost 56% achieved the widely recognised "gold standard" of 5 or more subjects at grades A* to C. This is an increase of 2.7% on last year and over 5% since the authority's first set of results in 1997.

Chief Adviser, Jeff Hart said : "They are confirmations of the rising standards seen throughout the Borough. Significant progress is being made in equipping our young people for their future. Of equal encouragement is the way that, for the second year running, Poole's improvement has been greater than that nationally. Whereas in 1997 we were 5.6% above the national average we are now 8% higher. Despite our very limited funding, pupils in Poole and their teachers have made huge efforts to raise standards. I am delighted that they have achieved such success."
