11 Aug 08Chewing Gum: Are You a Sinner or a Binner?
A campaign promoting the correct disposal of chewing gum has been launched in Poole in partnership with The Chewing Gum Action Group
.
The campaign started on Monday 11 August in Poole High Street outside Burger King with mascot, a life sized chewing gum character encouraging visitors and residents to be 'binners and not sinners'.
The mascot was designed to show people what happens when gum is dropped on the ground. A competition to name him is planned to take place later this summer.
Officers from Borough of Poole's Environmental and Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS) were there to promote the correct way to dispose of chewing gum and gave away free chewing gum disposal wrappers to members of the public.
There was also an opportunity to enter a prize draw with the chance to win a £50 Rockley Water Sports
voucher.
E&CPS have been carrying out chewing gum surveys in the borough where chewing gum is a problem. These areas will be monitored before, during, and after the campaign to measure the level of the campaign's success.
Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Irresponsible disposal of chewing gum causes unsightly stains across the streets of Poole. We are keen to reinforce the message to the public that chewing gum is litter and should not be discarded on the street. After the success of last years cigarette butt campaign with ENCAMS
, we are pleased to be working with The Chewing Gum Action Group in educating people and encouraging them to change their behaviour."
This is the first of a number of environmental roadshows planned for this year.
