Pay By Plastic To Park In Poole

Motorists using council owned car parks across Poole can pay for their parking by mobile phone from Monday 4 August.

Lady calling the RingGo serviceBorough of Poole's Transportation Services are holding a six-month trial of the service known as RingGo link will open in new window in 31 of their pay and display areas where motorists can pay for parking with a credit or debit card.

Motorists can call the local 01202 number and pay for their parking quickly and easily using the automated speech recognition technology provided by Cobalt Telephone Technologies Ltd link will open in new window.

A four-digit location code displayed on car park signs will be requested, as well as vehicle information including the colour, make and registration number before finally asking the customer to specify a parking time.

People using the service can also extend their parking period (subject to the maximum stay permitted) by simply calling the number again and saying how much longer they want to stay.

Traditional ticket machines will remain available at the car parks for motorists who prefer to pay with change.

Calls will be charged at customers normal rate and parking charges remain the same for both types of payment. However, there will be an additional 20p convenience charge for mobile phone payments, which is collected by RingGo.

Cllr Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: "We are aware that people don't carry a lot of change in this day and age and by giving residents and visitors a wider choice of payment options, we hope to make it easier to park in Poole."

RingGo has been offered in nearby coastal areas with great success and we trust we will see a similar take up of the service here."

Similar schemes have been adopted in Bournemouth and Christchurch and if successful the system could become a permanent fixture in the town's car parks.
