Overgrown Hedges

There are over 68 kilometres of hedges maintained across the borough. These include formal hedges in parks, rural hedges and hedges bordering dual carriageways. Hedges are cut using a mixture of hand held and tractor mounted equipment.

Formal Hedges

These usually consist of ornamental plant species and are cut by hand (secateurs, loppers, hedge cutters, etc.) and occasionally tractor mounted equipment.

The contractor is responsible for:

  • Cutting once or twice per annum
  • Cutting sides and top as necessary to maintain a neat, tidy hedge that does not obstruct or overhang
  • Collecting cuttings

The contractor is not responsible for:

  • Watering
  • Cutting to create or maintain private views
  • Cutting back private boundary hedges, which overhand paths and pavements

Leisure Services is responsible for:

Arranging for the replacing, replanting or provision of new hedges


Rural Hedges

These consist predominantly of native plant species and are cut with tractor-mounted equipment.

The contractor is responsible for:

  • Cutting once per annum
  • Cutting sides and top as necessary to maintain a neat, tidy hedge that does not obstruct or overhang
  • Clearing around street signs and furniture
  • Clearing grass cuttings from paths, pavements and roads

The contractor is not responsible for:

  • Cutting to create or maintain private views
  • Cutting back private boundary hedges
  • Controlling weeds

Hedges on High Speed Roads

These consist predominantly of native plant species and are cut with tractor-mounted equipment. Works on these sites require additional traffic management and in some cases this includes the use of mobile traffic works.

The contractor is responsible for:

  • Cutting once per annum (ordinarily co-ordinated with final grass cut)
  • Cutting sides and top as necessary to maintain a neat, tidy hedge that does not obstruct or overhang
  • Clearing around street signs and furniture
  • Clearing cuttings from paths, pavements and roads
  • Scheduling the work
  • Providing traffic management

The contractor is not responsible for:

  • Cutting to create or maintain private views
