Hamworthy Park has been completly refurbished over the period of three years. Within the new enlarged fenced dog free area there are two separate play areas aimed at different age groups, space for sunbathing, picnics and a large Paddling Pool with water features, which is open from the late May bank holiday weekend until September each year.
During 2009 the separate "Challenge" area was constructed outside the fenced area near to the boat compound has been designed especially for a slightly older age group (12 years+) looking for that extra physical challenge. It features the very exciting rotating Skysurf set in a safe 'fall zone' of bark mulch, and two "Altima" climbing poles again supplied by Proludic to provide an aspect of competition. Youth seating was also installed close to this equipment.
A "Fawns" rebound wall with skills panel, a cricket wicket and a basket ball hoop on a tarmacadam base was installed between the challenge area and the cafe. There is a sepate pair of "kick about goals" for informal football situated near the car park.
The play equipment in this play area was manufactured and installed to comply with current safety standards applying at the time of installation and all items of equipment are provided with a safer surface where required.
The play equipment and the immediate surrounding areas are inspected on a regular basis. An annual inspection is also carried out by an independent qualified organisation that prepares a safety audit and a report to enable the Council to plan long term maintenance and renewal.
The playgrounds within the fenced area are split into two separate areas, the toddler play area caters for younger children up to the age of eight which was opened in May 2007.
The adjacent "Adventure" area caters for children up to the age of 14 was completed in July 2009 and features an exciting range of equipment, much of it unique in Poole. A new Hexagonal Swing caters for 6 users at any one time, and the ever popular Buddy Swing is also designed for shared use.
Top of young people's wish list was an Aerial Cableway, and one has been included in the design - the first in Poole. An Ixo multi play unit, Rodeo Board, Aeroskate, Gyro Spiral and Double Perch supplied by Proludic.
The project was designed in conjunction with pupils from Carter Community College, Hamworthy Middle School and Turlin Moor Community School, and other park users.
In August 2009, a surprise addition was made to this area - using the balance of the budget contingency when we bought & installed a Supernova in the space once taken by the old roundabout.
A stile was also installed in the fenceline around the paddling pool and playareas (replacing a fence panel) giving quicker access between these two play areas.
Officially opened by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Charles Meachin, on 3rd August 2009
