In the United Kingdom the election is taking place on Thursday 4th June (polling stations will be open between 07:00 and 22:00). Votes will be counted on Sunday 7th June and the result announced that evening (after the close of voting in all European Union countries).
Here is the timescale of events leading up to the election:
- 28th April - Notice of Election published
- 29th April to 7th May - Delivery of nomination papers (by appointment, between 10:00 and 16:00)
- 7th or 8th May - Publication of list of parties and individual candidates nominated
- 14th May - Briefing session for appointed Agents (12:00 at Poole Civic Centre)
- 19th May - Deadline to apply to be on the Electoral Register in order to vote at the election
- 19th May - Deadline to apply for a postal vote for this election
- 27th May - Deadline to apply for a proxy vote just for this election
Notice of Election for the South West Electoral Region (including Isles of Scilly & Gibraltar)
I, Paul Kevin Morris being the Regional Returning Officer for the South West Electoral Region give notice that an election is to be held for six members of the European Parliament. If the election is contested the poll will be held on 4 June 2009 between 7am and 10pm. Nomination papers must be delivered to me at: Room 156, Civic Centre, Poole, Dorset BH15 2RU from 10am on 29 April 2009. Delivery of the nomination papers can then be made from 10am to 4pm on any working day but no later than 4pm on 7 May 2009. Nomination papers can be obtained from the above address and during the time for delivery of the papers. The deposit for each registered political party or individual candidate (£5,000) can be paid by cash or bankers draft (banks operating in the UK or Gibraltar only) and, with my prior permission, by credit or debit card. Applications to be included on the register of electors to be used at this election MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer at the Electoral Office address by 19 May 2009. Any elector may apply for a postal or proxy vote at this election. Applications to vote by post or by postal proxy MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on 19 May 2009. Applications to vote by proxy MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on 27 May 2009. A person can apply to vote by proxy on the grounds of disability if the applicant becomes incapacitated after 5pm on 27 May 2009. The application MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on the date of the poll. Applications to cancel or alter postal and proxy votes, or to change from postal to proxy voting MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on 19 May 2009.
