Who Can Register A Birth
It is usual for the Mother to register the birth, but if she is married to the baby's father at the time of the birth it is possible for him to register.
However, if the mother and father are not married, the father's details can be entered into the register if both parents attend together to register the birth. If this is not possible, please contact the Register Office at Poole for further advice.
If the mother is not married to the baby's father she is not normally obliged to include the father's details in the register. If they are not entered at the time of registration it may be possible to enter his details at a later date.
I don't speak English - Can someone help me?
If English is not your first language and you would like someone to help you with the registration, please feel free to ask a relative or friend to accompany you to the Register Office.
However, please remember that the birth must be registered by a qualified informant (usually the mother) and, regrettably, a friend cannot register on your behalf.
