When And Where To Register Your Baby's Birth

When to register a birth

You can register your baby's birth as soon as you like and are able, but please remember that it is a legal requirement for you to register within 42 days of the birth.

Where to register a birth

The baby's birth must be registered in the registration district in which it occurred. This means that if your baby was born within the Borough of Poole the registration must be made at:

Poole Registration Services
The Guildhall
Market Street
POOLE
BH15 1NP

The register office runs an appointment system. You can contact us on 01202 633744 to book an appointment.

How to register if you don't live in Poole - the district where your baby was born

If your baby was born in Poole, but it is impractical for you to visit the Register Office at Poole, you can go to another Register Office in England and Wales (for example, the one closest to your home) to see the Registrar there.

This process is called a Birth Declaration. The Registrar who sees you will forward the information you give there to the Registrar at Poole. In this case, any birth certificates you require, and the card to register your baby with your local GP, will be sent to you by post.

Please remember that these arrangements rely on many different organisations and services (postal services, part time register offices etc.) and this will inevitably delay the arrangements you may wish to make with regards to family allowances.

If you choose to use this facility please contact the Register Office in advance of your attendance for further information.
