Citizenship
From 1st January 2004 every adult applying for British citizenship is required by law to attend a citizenship ceremony.
These ceremonies are conducted by the Civil Registration service and officiated by the Mayor and Sheriff. The ceremony consists of an Oath (or Affirmation) and a Pledge of Allegiance, following which the applicants are addressed by the Mayor and Sheriff and are presented with a certificate of registration.
The ceremony concludes with photo opportunities and a short social gathering.
