How to register a Civil Partnership

Decide first of all on the date when you would like to form your Civil Partnership. You should book your appointment with your chosen venue. You can register your Civil Partnership at a Register Office, or at one of the venues approved for Marriage. You are not allowed to register your Civil Partnership at a religious venue.

Contact your local Register Office to make an appointment to give notice of your intention to register a Civil Partnership. Both of you will have to give Notice. Although you have to give Notice at your local Register Office, you do not necessarily have to register your Civil Partnership there.

Attend the Register Office to give your Notice. When you attend to give notice, you will have to provide proof of identity, (usually a passport, driving licence, birth certificate, etc.) proof of residence in your area, (usually a council tax bill, utility bill, etc.) and £30. If you have ever been through a marriage or partnership registration in the UK or elsewhere, you will need to take proof of how that ended (e.g. Decree Absolute or Death Certificate).

Fifteen clear days after giving your Notice, you can register your partnership by signing a Civil Partnership Schedule in front of the Registrar and your two witnesses. You can have a simple legal declaration and signing, or you may choose a special ceremony. Either way, you will need to bring two witnesses, who should be over 18 years of age.
