Alan Holt being presented with the John Jay ShieldJohn Jay Shield 2007

Alan Holt, vice-chairman of Dorset Crimestoppers, has been awarded the John Jay Shield for 2007.

Mr Holt, from Blandford Forum, has been involved with Dorset Crimestoppers for nine years. The award recognises his fundraising efforts and the work he has done to considerably raise the profile of the group’s work.

Mr Holt was presented with the John Jay Shield by Paul Bompas, a former Police Divisional Commander for Poole, at a special ceremony held at Hamworthy Social Club, Magna Road.

Alan Holt, said: “I receive this award on behalf of the entire Board and not as an individual as they all do outstanding work on behalf of Dorset Crimestoppers. For me it is a huge honour to receive this award. We don’t do this work to win awards but when we do, it is truly appreciated and a fantastic way of having the work we do recognised by others.”

Richard Daubeney, Chairman of Dorset Crimestoppers, said: “Alan has a real passion to help the community and is an unsung hero. He has regularly given up his own time and used his annual leave to attend events, make presentations and man information stalls on behalf of the charity.”

John McBride, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, said: “It is due to the hard work of individuals such as Alan and the partnership working of other agencies that has helped make Dorset the second safest county in England.”

Runners up for this year’s award were Rachel Sharpe and Brian Lovell, who also received certificates at the ceremony.

History of the award

In 1996 Superintendent Bompas of Dorset Police was seconded to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York as a ‘visiting professor’. In appreciation of his work at the college he was presented with a shield by Dr Gerald Lynch, the President of the College, which was to be awarded by the Borough of Poole in recognition of crime prevention initiatives undertaken within the borough.

In 2003 Poole Safe Together Partnership decided to open up the nominations of excellence to the public. We asked for nominations for unsung heroes of the community: individuals or groups that had been working actively in the community dealing with issues that have an impact on community safety or crime prevention. This covers a whole range of activities and topics but to qualify the project should encompass one or more of the following:

  • Making the community a safer place to live, work or visit
  • Improving the lives of those who are at risk of offending or re-offending
  • Helping and supporting those who have been victims of crime
  • Assisting in the prevention and/or detection of crime
