We have adopted an Anti-Fraud Policy And Strategy. This Policy deals with issues of fraud in relation to Social Security benefits administered by us, which are Housing Benefit (HB) and Council Tax Benefit (CTB). It also includes the Benefit Fraud Prosecution and Sanction Policy. Together these documents form our Anti-Fraud Framework.

  • We are committed to ensuring that people should get all the benefits to which they are correctly entitled.
  • We are committed to the prevention, deterrence, detection and investigation of all types of Fraud.
  • Benefit Fraud is seen by us as theft from the electorate and is therefore deemed to be anti-social.
  • To report alleged acts of Benefit Fraud to us, is deemed by us to be, public spirited.
  • We will take appropriate action against those who fraudulently obtain benefits to which they are not entitled.
  • We will respect the civil liberties of all persons involved in the investigation of alleged fraud.
  • We will seek repayment in full, within the constraints of the legislation of all benefit that a customer obtains to which they are not entitled.

This policy follows the Government principles on Welfare Reform in that it implements the three-pronged campaign against fraud: better prevention; improved detection; and more effective deterrence.
