Schools' Environment Award - Themes

Litter PickEnvironmental and Cleanliness

To meet the Award criteria, schools will need to promote a positive attitude towards the environment and cleanliness. The approach illustrated in the Award will help result in improvements in cleanliness and anti-social behaviour in the school and surrounding environment for years to come.

The Award will raise the issues of being a good citizen, help children identify dangers of litter to themselves, to wildlife, and the environment.

Recycling and Waste Minimisation

Using national surveys it was found that the average amount of waste produced in schools was 71.2 Kg per person per academic year. This equates to in excess of 806,000 tonnes of waste being produced by schools nationally. If Poole's target to recycle 40% of all waste produced was applied to this figure, we would have saved 320,000 tonnes of waste going to landfill!

The Award will help pupils become aware of the problems associated with waste and the benefits of recycling and waste minimisation.

Reducing Energy Use

The Award will help pupils become aware of the problems associated with the use of finite resources such as oil, coal and gas from which most energy is derived.

Schools will be required to benchmark their energy use and identify where reductions in usage can be made, as well as benefitting from the financial savings. Ultimately schools will make an actual reduction in the amount of energy used.

Reducing Water Use

The Award will help pupils become aware of the issues associated with excessive use of water. Schools will be required to benchmark their water use and identify where reductions in their usage can be made, as well as benefitting from the financial savings. Ultimately schools will make an actual reduction in the amount of water used.
