Refuse, Recycling and Garden Waste Collection Dates
To find out when your bins are due for collection please see our refuse, recycling and garden waste collection date pages. Bins are emptied on the same day every week, including bank holidays – Christmas collections are an exception.
Please read our garden waste collection page for more information on this scheme.
How to present your bin for collection
Bins should be ready by 7.00 a.m on your day of collection. If you do not do this your refuse, recycling or garden waste may not be collected. If this happens you are required to make your own arrangements to dispose of your waste free of charge at Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre. Only those bins genuinely missed by the collection crews will be revisited. Please note garden waste collections will not be completed until 8:00 p.m on your day of collection.
Bins should be placed either:
- (if your property fronts onto a road), adjacent to the pavement or in an easily available position in your garden not more than 1 metre from the pavement.
- (if your property does not front onto a road), adjacent to the pavement alongside the nearest road that is accessible to a refuse collection vehicle.
After the bin is emptied it will be returned to the position from which it was collected. If this is not happening please report this to us.
Bin lids must be closed and no extra bags, boxes or loose refuse will be collected – you must arrange for disposal yourself at Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre.
When reporting a missed bin
Please report a missed bin collection using our on-line facility. Remember you must present your bin by 7:00 a.m we cannot guarantee a set collection time and therefore require all bins to be presented by this time.
Please note daily collections are not usually completed before 3:00 pm. 10:00 p.m for the garden waste collection service.
Please check to see if the rest of your road has been serviced. There are a number of reasons why we may simply be delayed on a particular day for example access problems, vehicle breakdowns.
Please check to see if a sticker has been placed on your bin indicating it may be overweight or in the case of recycling contaminated. If so please lighten your bin and/or remove the contaminate prior to reporting the missed collection to enable us to return.
Access Issues
The collection crews will attempt to service every property on the round, however, parked cars, roadworks, narrow access and limited access to bin compounds may result in your refuse, recycling or garden bin being missed. If this is the case we will make every effort to return once access becomes available.
Overweight Bins
Bins weighed down by large amounts of turf, wet grass, soil, brick, stone, plaster or other building material could cause the bin to break when it is being emptied risking injury to the refuse collector. For this reason overweight bins will not be emptied.
Damaged or missing bins
On occasions bins can become damaged, for example broken lid, axle or wheels become loose, or they may fall in the collection vehicle when being serviced. If this should happen, please report it to us using our on-line facility for a repair or replacement to be organised.
Please note, all replacements are now supplied as a large recycling bin and a small refuse bin as standard. Additional capacity will be considered for large families, or householders with medical conditions that generate extra waste.
The Volume of your Bin Contents
It is our policy to collect only the waste or recycling contained in your wheeled bin. This is in order to;
- protect the health and safety of the collection crews
- prevent windblown litter
- avoid uncontained waste attracting vermin
Make sure your bins are not overfull and that the lid closes. Overflowing material will fall out when the truck picks up the bin. Also, please do not try and squash large pieces of acceptable cardboard into your bin as it could cause problems when emptying. Any excess material can be taken to Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Bin Policy - Bin Swap
If you are finding that your blue recycling bin is struggling to cope and your black refuse bin is regularly not full, why not take the opportunity to swap? Over 4000 residents are already benefiting from the exchange.

Additional capacity will be considered for large families, or householders with medical conditions that generate extra waste.

How To Dispose of Bulky Household Waste
We work in partnership with the Charity Dorset Reclaim
who collect bulky household waste such as beds, sofas and fridges / freezers. Alternatively these items can be disposed of at the Nuffield Household waste site as well.
If you require these items to be collected from your property please contact the Poole branch of Dorset Reclaim
directly on 01202 679350. Please note there may be a charge for this service which should be discussed with Dorset Reclaim
.
Dorset Reclaim
assist in the development and education of local people by providing opportunities to volunteer and help people gain work experience and develop and enhance social integration skills. The prinicipal aim of the organisation is to provide furniture and household items to those in need within the local community
Waste Electrical Equipment
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive came into force on 1st July 2007. This means that you are not only able to recycle large electrical items but any smaller electrical items like hairdryers, kettles, toothbrushes.
A crossed out wheelie bin symbol will be put on new electrical items to remind consumers that when they replace a household electrical item the old one can be recycled if taken to the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre.
For more information about this directive please use the following link to Netregs
or the Department for Trade and Industry
.
Low-Energy Light Bulbs or Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) should not be a major hazard if handled correctly. However, they could cause a problem if disposed of in a waste bin because of small amounts of mercury they contain. Used bulbs can be taken back to the retailer if the owner is a member of The Distributer Takeback Scheme. We also provide a facility to dispose of low-energy light bulbs at the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Collection Crew - Driving Laws
As of April 2007 it became a legal requirement for drivers of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) undertaking waste collection services to take a mandatory 45 minute break during their working hours to comply with Operators Licence legislation.
As such members of the public may notice our vehicles parked up at various times across the borough avoiding unnecessary downtime involved in returning to the Depot to take this legal break.
Please be assured that collections will resume as soon as these breaks have been completed. If you have an issue to do with a member of our collection crew then please report it to us.
