Blue Bin Recycling Guidelines
Please follow these guidelines so you can be sure that your blue recycling bin will be collected every time.
Don't bag recycling in your bin
Re-use your plastic bags or take them to your local supermarket to be recycled. Please do not put your recycling in bags in your bin.
Don't contaminate your recycling
Check the page on what can go in your blue recycling bin. If you are unsure about anything, please contact Environmental and Consumer Protection using the details at the bottom of the page. If your bin is contaminated, it will have a sticker put on it advising that the items in the bin are not recyclable and that it will not be collected.
Please note: If your recycling has been contaminated, you will be responsible for transferring the contents of your blue bin into your refuse bin which will have been emptied the previous working day.
The Volume of your Bin Contents
It is our policy to collect only the waste or recycling contained in your wheeled bin. This is for three main reasons, to protect the health and safety of the collection crews, to prevent windblown litter and to avoid uncontained waste attracting vermin.
Make sure your bins are not overfull and that the lid closes. Overflowing material will fall out when the truck picks up the bin. Also, please do not try and squash large pieces of acceptable cardboard into your bin as it could cause problems when emptying. These can be taken to Nuffield Waste Recycling Centre.
Check your Collection Calendar
Your refuse will be collected every week and your recycling will be collected fortnightly. Your refuse collection day will not change, however you may have been allocated a different recycling collection day. Please check the recycling and refuse calendars to find out your collection day.
Your Blue Bin on the Pavement
On the day of your collections, we have insurance to cover liability for any damage caused from bins being on the Highway. Your bin should be placed out for collection by 7am and removed from the Highway on the same day as it is emptied. On other days you could be liable for any damage or injury caused by your bin being on the highway, it can also constitute an offence under Section 137 of the Highways Act 1980
