Book News
Year of Reading Events
As part of our National Year of reading activities, there will be book swaps and book swap events running in the libraries throughout June. If you have books you’ve finished reading – why not bring them into Poole Libraries this month and pick up another title to read for free? Check with the staff to find out what is happening in your local library.
In July we will be featuring books on poetry and lyrics and running a local limerick competition on the theme of poetry, books and reading. In August the spotlight will be on sport to tie in with the Beijing Olympics and our own Book Pentathlon! This is a reading challenge to read 5 books, designed to tempt people to read something different from their normal book choice.
If you are down at Flag Head Chine between 4th and 8th August, you might like to drop in at our Beach Hut Library where there will various activities going on including a reading group meeting with author, Imogen Parker. She will be talking about her book 'The Time of Our Lives' and the forthcoming sequel.
In September we will be asking you about your favourite childhood book, and bringing medieval Poole alive with a family storytelling session in Poole old town. Another Dorset-based author, the thriller writer Lyndon Stacey, has also been invited on board to meet readers at Broadstone Library. Please check with the library or look on our website www.boroughofpoole.com/libraries for further news of events.
Challenge success
It was a simple idea – to read six books between January and May, but the Six Book Challenge has been a big hit with Poole readers. No fewer than 127 people took up the challenge and 50 have completed it so far, reading thrillers, biographies, history books, non-fiction and ‘Quick Reads’. Some of the challengers received their certificates at a ceremony during Adult Learners’ Week at the end of May.
Richard & Judy all change?
At the end of the month the TV presenters will once again be producing their choice of summer reads for our pleasure, but with their move from Channel 4 to UKTV, the Book Club may be in for a change. It has been a phenomenon in the book world, and millions of people have enjoyed their recommended titles. This year’s Summer Read titles will be announced on 16th June.
