The Costa (formerly Whitbread) Awards are made in various categories: first novel, novel, children's book, poetry and biography. The shortlists are announced in November and the winners in January with the 'Book of the Year' announcement in early February at the awards ceremony.
The popular presenters' book selections have become a feature of the publishing year. The chosen Book Club titles are revealed in January and presented on the programme over several weeks, leading up to the choice of 'Best Read of the Year'. Also look out for the Summer Reads, holiday reading titles announced in June, and the Christmas Book Party, giving ideas for gifts and stocking fillers.

These awards are open only to women writers and are judged by an exclusively female panel, which makes them a little different from the rest. The fiction shortlist is revealed in April and the new writer's award shortlist in May, followed by the winners' announcement in June.
This most prestigious of literary prizes always causes a stir. The shortlist is made public with fanfares in September and the winning writer announced at a televised ceremony in October.
