Services at the Crematorium

Types of Services

You may hold the following types of ceremony at the Crematorium:

  • Full religious ceremony
  • Brief committal ceremony following a separate service at another place of worship
  • Secular (non-religious) services
  • No ceremony

You can choose a representative of your faith, friends or family to deliver the service. Some people prefer to have a silent service.

Service times

You will need to book a date for the service. The Crematorium office is open Mondays to Fridays 9:00am- 5:00pm.  Please come and visit us so we can discuss your arrangements.

The standard service time is 30 minutes in total. This allows 20 minutes for the service plus five minutes either side for mourners to arrive and leave.  Services are normally held during the week.

If you wish to you can extend the service to 45 minutes or you can book a double time slot. You can also request to hold your service at the weekend.  Extra charges apply for these options.

Crematorium Capacity

  • Maximum capacity  120 (including Crematorium staff)
  • Seating for 80 people

If you know a large number of people will attend the service please consider booking a double time slot so they have time to pay their individual respects.

Parking

Although we have plenty of parking spaces (115) we have a number of visitors to the grounds as well as mourners at the Crematorium.  Please allow yourself ample time to park and car-share is recommended where possible.

The Service

  • Mourners gather in the Crematorium waiting room or close to the Chapel entrance a few minutes before the service time.
  • When the principal mourners are ready the coffin is brought into the Chapel.
  • While it is being placed on the Catafalque (a raised platform) mourners are directed to their seats for the service.
  • During the service the Catafalque is usually lowered at the time that the committal of the body takes place. At the end of the service mourners leave the Chapel past the coffin and through the side door.

Floral Tributes

  • Immediately after the service floral tributes are moved to the Wreath Court via the Cloisters to enable family and friends to gather, talk and view the flowers
  • The flowers normally remain here for three days before removal and disposal (along with any other tributes you may leave)
  • During these three days the family may wish to make other arrangements for the flowers.

  • The cremation takes place shortly after the service
  • The cremator can only accept one coffin at a time. Coffins are issued with an identity card that stays with the remains throughout the whole process
  • After cooling the remains are transferred to a special container to await collection
  • You may collect the cremated remains from the Crematorium or from your Funeral Director
