Book Pentathlon
Don't forget that the Book Pentathlon reading challenge (where you read 5 books in 5 months) is running right up to Christmas. Download book ideas lists on the right hand side of this page.
Crime at Christmas
Looking forward to December and to wind up our Year of Reading events, we are planning a Crime at Christmas party at Branksome Library with Simon Hall, thriller writer and BBC crime correspondent. Look out for details in the next few weeks.
The outlook for 2009 is also exciting with a new round of the Six Book Challenge, Family History Week, and a new mass read linked to Darwin's 200th anniversary, to mention just a few of the forthcoming events.
Man Booker Prize winner
The Man Booker Prize 2008
has been won by the Indian author, Aravind Adiga for his debut novel, The White Tiger. Chairman of the judges, Michael Portillo, said that the panel felt the book 'shocked and entertained in equal measure. The novel undertakes the extraordinarily difficult task of gaining and holding the reader's sympathy for a thoroughgoing villain.'
The book, which has been described as witty, energetic and disturbing, tells the story of an Indian servant who kills his boss. It also draws a picture of corruption and social injustice in modern India. Aravind Adige wins a cheque for £50,000 and worldwide attention for his winning book.
